Behrens Family Winery is a boutique winery in the truest sense. Owned by Les Behrens and Lisa Drinkward, who have made wine under the Behrens & Hitchcock label since 1993 and added the Erna Schein brand in 2005, Behrens produces small lots at its winery perched high on top of Spring Mountain in Napa Valley.
Although the winery opened in 1997, the roots of this winemaking team can be found in the Folie Douce Restaurant in Arcata launched back in 1991 by the Behrens'. After developing a marvelous menu of French cuisine and an outstanding wine list, they took on the challenge of making wine out of their basement of their home in Humboldt County. Bob and Lily Hitchcock came on board during that first harvest to manage the business and financial machinations of the winery, and Behrens & Hitchcock Winery was officially formed. After four years of running both the restaurant and winery, Lisa and Les sold Folie Douce in 1997 and moved to Napa Valley to make wine full-time.
Each wine Les and Lisa make is a low tech labor of love: crushed into one-ton T-bins, punched down by hand, gently transferred to barrel and bottled unfined and unfiltered. One only has to look at Les and Lisa's hands during harvest to know their wines are truly 'handcrafted."
